Howl-O-Scream is in full swing and some of our animals are playing big roles in the festivities.
If you have had the chance to visit France, you may have noticed our furry little friends climbing around on the ropes above your head. The rats have been so much fun to work with and train. The rope they now scurry across used to be behind our zoo building and was used as a training tool. We then moved the rope into the park so that they would recognize their scent on the rope.

When the rats realized there was peanut butter at the end of the rope, they didn’t hesitate at all. They prefer chunky, but are just as happy with creamy. Since we had been training them to run the rope during the day, I thought their biggest hurdle was going to be running in the dark. This was not the case. They actually seem to do better at night. Make sure to stop by and see them. They are fun to watch and are getting a great reaction from the crowd.
We also have added a behind-the-scenes tour focusing on all of our creepy critters. When you come on the tour, your guide will introduce you to spiders, scorpions, snakes and owls and tell you all about the mythology that goes along with these often misunderstood animals. Also, once the horses and sheep are asleep for the night, we bring out our creepy critters once again for a photo opportunity in the Highland Stables. Stop by in-between haunted houses to visit these animals and grab a photo or two. Or are you too scared?
