The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is sponsoring the 23rd Annual Clean the Bay Day on Sat., June 4, and once again we are doing our part to show support for this worthwhile event. Because the park is in its fulltime operation on June 4, we wanted to make sure we were able to contribute so we began the clean-up effort a little early.
Each year we continue to clean the same stretch of Yorktown Beach along the Colonial Parkway. Armed with trash bags, plastic gloves and grabbers, 16 volunteers spent the morning in the sun picking up trash and debris. At the end of our trek we ended up with shoes, more than 100 bait containers; a water ski; more than 500 feet of fishing line; 16 sunburned noses; a car bumper; countless plastic bags and plastic bottles … all totaling 930 pounds of trash.
Thanks to all who volunteered. We will see you all again in September for the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.
